Pioneer is a small town located just one hour southeast of Sacramento and one hour from Lake Tahoe along Highway 88 near the Eldorado National Forest. The community of Pioneer boasts an 18-hole golf course, public tennis courts, high country lakes and streams for fishing and boating and is just 40 miles east of the Kirkwood Ski Area. The town sits on the ridge above the Mokelumne River with outstanding views, clean air, and friendly people. Pioneer is also home to a resort located on the Bear River that features camping, fishing, swimming, water skiing, hiking and off road trails for all terrain vehicles. In summer, the resort features many planned activities for visitors, and in wintertime there are over sixty miles of trails for cross country skiing and other snow play. Golf is also available in the Pioneer area. Another fun thing to do is to take a sightseeing car tour of the area and visit the many other small historic towns of the region including Twain Harte, Murphys, Sonora and Angels Camp, home of the annual "Frog Jumping Jubilee." If you have an interest in the California Gold Rush, the town of Pioneer and the surrounding communities is an exiting place to explore. You can even go underground into some of the mines and caverns and see and learn where the miners worked first hand. The small town of Pioneer is located in an area that is rich in history and a fascinating piece of American history.

Pioneer Weather & Climate

The foothills region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in Northeastern California, enjoys warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Many people are surprised to find such a marked change of seasons at this elevation, but leaves change and temperatures drop as the rainy season begins in fall. This area receives lots of rain November through March and it begins to taper off in spring. Snow is possible, but rare. Summers are hot and dry with sunshine almost every day. Fog is sometimes a problem in winter, although not as common as in the lower elevations. Thunderstorms are rare, but can happen any time of the year. As you move higher into the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the seasons are even more distinct and snow can become quite deep in winter.
