Sutter-Creek
is a beautiful, historic gold rush town, set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, approximately 30 miles from Sacramento. Incorporated as a town in 1854, Sutter Creek was an important mining town with some of the richest, deep rock mines in the Mother Lode country of Northern California, until the mines shut down in 1942. After World War II, Sutter Creek turned to tourism as its' main industry. Today the small town is a wonderful mix of old and new with a charming "hometown" atmosphere. The main street of town is lined with quaint Gold Rush era buildings that house antique stores, unique shops and restaurants, and beautiful bed & breakfast inns. Sutter Creek also offers musical productions at the Sutter Creek Theater and award winning live theater at the Main Street Theater Works. History buffs will enjoy visiting the Monteverde General Store Museum, which offers a look at frontier life with authentic clothing, hardware, groceries, pharmaceuticals, candy, mining supplies and more. Also, just north of Sutter Creek, on Historic Highway 49, is the Sutter Gold Mine. Here, you can journey deep underground to learn all about gold mining, or try your hand at gold panning, see a movie on hard rock mining or the California Gold Rush, and visit the Gold Store for souvenirs, rocks, gold jewelry and more. Other attractions near Sutter Creek include the Calaveras Big Trees State Park and the Chaw'se Indian Grinding Rock State Park.

The Northeastern Sierra Nevada foothills region of California has warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. There is, however, a marked change of seasons at this elevation. Leaves change color and temperatures drop as the rainy season begins in autumn. This area receives lots of rain November through March and tapers off in spring. Snow showers are possible in winter, but measurable amounts are rare. Summers are hot and dry with sunshine almost every day. Fog is sometimes a problem in winter, although not as common as in the lower elevations. Thunderstorms are rare, but can happen any time of the year. As you move higher into the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the seasons are even more distinct and snow can become quite deep in winter.
