Somerset
is a small, rural town set in the Sierra Nevada foothills historic "gold country" region of northern California. It is also part of the picturesque Shenandoah Valley wine country - about a dozen wineries set within peaceful rolling hills that are covered with grapevines. The town of Somerset is reached via County Road E16, east of scenic Highway 49. It's a good area for backroads exploration with wine tasting, lots of small gold rush towns to explore, antique shops and country restaurants to enjoy. It is near the El Dorado National Forest, which offers hiking and camping among tall, shady pines. This is a good choice if you're looking for a place to enjoy nature without crowds. There are dozens of gorgeous small mountain lakes in the region that are great for fishing and boating, rivers for rafting and panning for gold. The Somerset area has something for everyone, except the ocean. It's filled with rivers and waterfalls, history, lush forest, small towns with bed & breakfasts, antique shops, wineries and great restaurants. The nearby city of Placerville is another interesting day trip with lots of shopping, art galleries, a historic "Old Town" and restaurants.

The foothills region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in Northeastern California, enjoys warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Many people are surprised to find such a marked change of seasons at this elevation, but leaves change and temperatures drop as the rainy season begins in fall. This area receives lots of rain November through March and it begins to taper off in spring. Snow is possible, but rare. Summers are hot and dry with sunshine almost every day. Fog is sometimes a problem in winter, although not as common as in the lower elevations. Thunderstorms are rare, but can happen any time of the year. As you move higher into the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the seasons are even more distinct and snow can become quite deep in winter.
