Dorrington is a tiny town with a population of less than one thousand, located in Calaveras County along Highway 4 in the central High Sierra Nevada Mountains. This is Sierra "Gold Country," an area filled with dozens of small gold rush "boom towns," all with an interesting history and a story to tell. Today, these communities offer visitors a place to stay while exploring the area - bed & breakfasts, hotels; rental homes and cottages can be found, along with antique shops and restaurants. It's a spectacular area, filled with rivers and waterfalls, forests and redwoods, and home to Sonora Pass, the second highest Sierra Nevada mountain pass (that's on a paved road,) at 9,624 feet. The road over this pass is usually open only a short time in summer, due to heavy snows that start early and end late in the season (but the view over the pass is worth the wait.) The town of Dorrington is also near the Calaveras County Big Trees State Park, which contains Redwood trees more than 2,000 years old, and offers hiking and backpacking, camping (both primitive and campgrounds.) Just a short drive north of Dorrington is Bear Valley, known for its exceptional skiing in winter, and hiking, mountain biking, rafting and camping in summertime. Dorrington is also near the Stanislaus National Forest and the Mercer Caverns, and is approximately a two-hour drive to Yosemite National Park.

Dorrington Weather & Climate

The Sierra Nevada Foothills region, or the "Mother Lode," as it is sometimes called, has four mild seasons. In fall, the leaves change and temperatures begin to drop. Winters receive lots of rain in November through March, and it is cool enough at night for a fire in the fireplace, but rarely does it ever snow in the foothills. Spring is very pleasant with showers sometimes continuing through April and May. Summers are hot, dry and sunny. The foothills region is usually a few degrees cooler than the lower valley regions in summer. Fog, which is often a problem at lower elevations in winter, occurs less frequently here. Many people from the Valley travel "above the fog" in the wintertime for a much-needed sunshine break. Thunderstorms can occur anytime in California, but they are very light and infrequent.
