Hathaway-Pines
is located along Highway 4 in Calaveras County, approximately two hours from the city of Stockton. This mountainous wilderness area has an abundance of recreational opportunities available for the whole family. Hathaway Pines Ranger Station is halfway between the towns of Arnold and Murphys and is a good resource for information in the area. Hathaway Pines is near Bear Valley Ski Resort, Calaveras Big Trees State Park and the Stanislaus National Forest. This offers ample opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, camping, and just about any other outdoors activity you desire! If fishing is your sport, the Stanislaus River and Beaver Creek both offer excellent opportunities for catching rainbow trout. There are many kinds of birds and animals, making it an exciting place for viewing wildlife. And with relatively mild temperatures yearlong, some of the area campsites are open year round. There are also many other lodging opportunities available in the Hathaway Pines area, from hotels, bed and breakfasts to wonderful high mountain, country style lodges. The Sierra Nevada Foothills region, or the "Mother Lode," as it is sometimes called, has four mild seasons. In fall, the leaves change and temperatures begin to drop. Winters receive lots of rain in November through March, and it is cool enough at night for a fire in the fireplace, but rarely does it ever snow in the foothills. Spring is very pleasant with showers sometimes continuing through April and May. Summers are hot, dry and sunny. The foothills region is usually a few degrees cooler than the lower valley regions in summer. Fog, which is often a problem at lower elevations in winter, occurs less frequently here. Many people from the Valley travel "above the fog" in the wintertime for a much-needed sunshine break. Thunderstorms can occur anytime in California, but they are very light and infrequent.
