Foresthill
is a small town located in Placer County, approximately 17 miles north of Auburn in the northeast part of the state. It is situated on a broad ridge between the North and Middle Forks of the American River. As of the 2000 census, the population of Foresthill was 1,791 residents. The town was founded in 1850 during the height of the Gold Rush when prospectors swarmed all over the Foresthill Divide along the American River. There are still several buildings in town from the era, including the Langstaff General Store. At one time, Foresthill was one of the largest towns in Placer County. Later, after the gold ran out, Foresthill turned to logging and a dozen or so lumber mills were established in and around the town. In the 1990s, after improvements to the Foresthill Road by the Federal Government, tourists began to rediscover the Foresthill Divide. With breathtaking snow covered mountains, many crystal clear lakes and streams and the recreational opportunities of the Tahoe National Forest, this historic town provides a unique experience for all. Fishing for Rainbow Trout is a very popular activity in the North and Middle Forks of the American River, and other recreational opportunities include hiking, camping, rafting and kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.

The foothills region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in Northeastern California, enjoys warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Many people are surprised to find such a marked change of seasons at this elevation, but leaves change and temperatures drop as the rainy season begins in fall. This area receives lots of rain November through March and it begins to taper off in spring. Summers are hot and dry with sunshine almost every day. Fog is sometimes a problem in winter, although not as common as in the lower elevations. Thunderstorms are rare, but can happen any time of the year. As you move higher into the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the seasons are even more distinct and snow can become quite deep in winter.
