Bear-Valley
is sometimes called "the secret of the Sierras." Located along Highway 4 in the central Sierra Nevada Mountains, the population of Bear Valley today is a mere 133. At one time, however, it was a booming gold rush town with stores, saloons and dance halls lining the streets. It's a ghost town, of sorts, with some of the old stone and adobe ruins and early Western architecture still intact. Today, Bear Valley is known for its skiing and other outdoors recreational opportunities. At an elevation of 7073 feet, and surrounded by thick forests and mountains, Bear Valley has exceptional skiing without the crowds and hassles of some of the larger California ski resorts. Bear Valley is inside the Stanislaus National Forest and this offers other fabulous outdoors activities such as hiking, mountain biking and camping. Beautiful lakes and streams are filled with trout for fishing. Nearby Calaveras Big Trees State Park contains giant Redwood trees more than 2,000 years old and Yosemite National Park is just a couple hours drive away. Restaurants, hotels, cabins and other rental properties are available in the Bear Valley area for your convenience. Bear Valley Weather & Climate

The high mountain country in Alpine County near Lake Tahoe enjoys a four-season climate. Located in the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains, summers are generally warm and dry with cool evenings and winters are quite cold and snowy. Moderate amounts of snow are reported each year in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with amounts and intensities increasing at elevations around 6,000 to 8,000 feet. Above 4,000 feet snow remains on the ground for long periods of time each winter and up to 40 feet of snow can be reported in the Sierras. Summers are quite pleasant and warm with occasional rain or thunderstorms. Sometimes, after a prolonged hot spell, thunderstorms at the higher elevations may become severe. Most rain occurs November through March.
