Coarsegold is a small town located in the Sierra Nevada foothills west of Yosemite National Park. During the California Gold Rush of 1849, miners heading north would stop overnight in the beautiful valley nestled along the banks of the Fresno River. The discovery of gold here, which was in the form of heavy, coarse gold nuggets, lead to the formation of the town, which eventually became one of California's largest mining centers. When the wagon road to Yosemite Valley was completed in 1876, Coarsegold became the overnight stage stop for travelers to Yosemite. Today, it remains the same - a charming stop for visitors on their way to Yosemite National Park along Highway 41. There are unlimited opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts in the Coarsegold area, which is near the Stanislaus National Forest, Eastman Lake, Hensley Lake and Bass Lake and the Sierra National Forest. Back road exploration, camping, hiking, backpacking, fishing, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing are just a few of the activities to enjoy in this scenic area of the state. Coarsegold, like many of the small towns of the area, focuses on tourism and so there are plenty of shops and restaurants here that cater to visitors. Coarsegold is also home to several festivals throughout the year, including their annual Peddlers Fair, Art in the Park, the Coarsegold Rodeo and the Annual Christmas Fair.

Coarsegold Weather & Climate

Central California located on the western slopes and foothills of the central Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, generally enjoys a pleasant year round climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. This region has a slogan that says it is "Below the Snow and Above the Fog." However, the 10,000 foot peaks in the area's eastern region attest to a wide diversity of terrain and climate. Average rainfall is between 40-50 inches, with October through April generally being the rainy months. Snow is rare in the lower elevations, but as you move higher into Yosemite and the Mammoth Lakes region, all of that changes. Winters in the mountains are snowy and cold, although sunny and chilly days are not uncommon. Visitors must be aware that conditions can change rapidly in the mountains in the wintertime.
