Mariposa is a historic gold rush town located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is the "southern most link of the forty-niners gold chain" (which is the series of small foothill towns that sprang up during the goldrush of the 1800s.) A picturesque village with a colorful past, the name "Mariposa" is Spanish for "butterfly." The area originally belonged to the Miwok tribe and was later claimed as a Spanish colony for Mexico. As the first explorers ventured into the land, they discovered a beautiful creek meandering through a peaceful valley that swarmed with butterflies. They named it "Arroyo de las Mariposas" which roughly means, "stream of butterflies." The town serves as the county seat for Mariposa County and it's easily reached via Highways 49 and 140 (which is known as the "all season highway" because it is open all year and continues on to Yosemite.) One of the attractions of the area is the Highway 140 itself, which is very scenic as it winds through the foothills and follows the "Wild and Scenic" Merced River through a breathtaking canyon. There are tons of activities to do in the Mariposa area and the wondrous Yosemite National Park is less than forty minutes away. Biking and hiking trails abound for every fitness level, white water rafting is available on the beautiful Merced River, skiing at Badger Pass and there's also camping, horseback riding, rock climbing, picnicking, rockhounding - even panning for gold. For the history buff, Mariposa County is full of historical sites, as well.

Mariposa Weather & Climate

Central California located on the western slopes and foothills of the central Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, generally enjoys a pleasant year round climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. This region has a slogan that says it is "Below the Snow and Above the Fog." However, the 10,000 foot peaks in the area's eastern region attest to a wide diversity of terrain and climate. Average rainfall is between 40-50 inches, with October through April generally being the rainy months. Snow is rare in the lower elevations, but as you move higher into Yosemite and the Mammoth Lakes region, all of that changes. Winters in the mountains are snowy and cold, although sunny and chilly days are not uncommon. Visitors must be aware that conditions can change rapidly in the mountains in the wintertime.
