Ahwahnee is a small town of approximately 2000, located southeast of Merced, just 44 miles from the Yosemite Valley Visitors Center and only 16 miles to the south entrance to Yosemite National Park. The word "Ahwahnee" was the name of the largest Native American village in the Yosemite Valley and also the name for the Valley itself. The region surrounding Ahwahnee is today one of the most popular places in the country to relax and enjoy nature. Aside from Yosemite National Park, Ahwahnee is also near Bass Lake and the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway, and is 105 miles from Kings Canyon, home of the giant sequoia trees. The famous Generals Highway climbs over 5000 feet to the breathtaking sequoia groves. From there, trails lead to the high-alpine wilderness areas, beneath which lie over 200 fascinating caverns. Closer to Ahwahnee, Yosemite National Park is an awe-inspiring natural wonder. It's the country's third oldest national park, and offers incredible vistas of some of the world's largest waterfalls, alpine forests, giant sequoias and the granite monoliths of El Capitan and Half Dome. Activities in and around the Ahwahnee/Yosemite area include auto touring, backpacking, bicycling, horseback riding, camping, wildlife viewing, stargazing, cave exploration, fishing, mountain climbing and nature walks. In summer, rangers lead nature walks and offer interpretive programs. Skiing and snowshoeing are available in the wintertime. A word of advice - winters in the High Sierra can be quite severe at times, and some roads and passes close due to snow, so its' best to check ahead at this time of year before traveling in the mountains.

Ahwahnee Weather & Climate

Central California located on the western slopes and foothills of the central Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, generally enjoys a pleasant year round climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. This region has a slogan that says it is "Below the Snow and Above the Fog." However, the 10,000 foot peaks in the area's eastern region attest to a wide diversity of terrain and climate. Average rainfall is between 40-50 inches, with October through April generally being the rainy months. Snow is rare in the lower elevations, but as you move higher into Yosemite and the Mammoth Lakes region, all of that changes. Winters in the mountains are snowy and cold, although sunny and chilly days are not uncommon. Visitors must be aware that conditions can change rapidly in the mountains in the wintertime.
