Baxter
is a small community in the Sierra Nevada Foothills region, situated along Interstate 80 in northern California. It is approximately an hour north of Sacramento. This is gold rush country or "The Mother Lode" as it's sometimes called. What's unique about visiting this area is exploring all of the small mining towns in the region, places with colorful names like Red Dog, Dutch Flat, Midas and You Bet. The scenery surrounding Baxter is outstanding, with tall pines and forested mountains, crystal clear lakes and streams. The larger gold rush towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City are just a short drive from Baxter and offer historical sites, shopping and dining opportunities. The entire town of Nevada City is listed as on the National Register of Historic Places. Another interesting attraction is the Empire Mine State Park near Grass Valley, where you can tour an actual gold mine and see what it was like for the miners of the late 1800s. A little further north up the mountain on Interstate 80 is beautiful Donner Lake and the Donner Memorial State Park, the site where the infamous Donner Party was stranded in the winter of 1846. The Park now features fishing and boating, camping, picnicking and other water sports. From Donner, it is an additional 35 miles to Reno, Nevada and approximately 20 miles to the north shore of Lake Tahoe.

The Gold Rush Country in the Sierra Nevada foothills of northern California enjoys four seasons. Although not as pronounced as the seasons in the eastern U.S., they are distinct. Summers are warm and dry, with pleasant temperatures and not the extreme heat of the lower valley regions. Autumn has mild days and crisp, cool nights and the leaves take on the hues of gold, yellow and purple. Winters are mild during the day with cold temperatures at night. Occasionally snow falls at these elevations, but rarely sticks for more than a few hours. Cool rainy days are the normal winter weather pattern, with the rainy season running November through March. Spring is delightful as the days lengthen and wildflowers spread over the hills.
