Shelter-Cove is a small community that was planned as a retirement spot and vacation getaway. It is nestled on the "Lost Coast" of northern California, which is approximately 24 miles west of Garberville in the upper northwest corner of the state. The Lost Coast is an area of California unknown to many, but well worth the time to visit, if you like seclusion and adventure. This dramatic stretch of black sand coastline runs about 80 miles along a rugged, lightly traveled coastline. It is backed by a dozen mountain peaks and crowned by the 4,087 foot Kings Peak. At least two dozen streams cascade down the deep canyon walls that plunge into the ocean, and of the four roads that lead into this wild coastal area, two are one-lane dirt roads - all four are twisting and steep. For hikers, the Lost Coast Trail winds through the Kings Range Conservation Area and the Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. Whale watching is popular in Shelter Cove from the headlands, bluffs and beaches along the coast. There are no organized whale watching services available, however. There are plenty of other activities near the village of Shelter Cove, such as golf, and a marina with boat rentals and fishing, beachcombing and tidepooling. Shelter Cove has a variety of lodging choices, restaurants, shops, a golf course and an airport. Shelter Cove is an eco-tourists dream, and is the only organized community along the 100-mile stretch of Lost Coast wilderness region.

Shelter Cove Weather & Climate

Northwest California has temperatures along the coast that vary only 10 degrees from summer to winter, although a greater range is found over inland areas. During most years, rainfall averages more than 40 inches in the driest areas, and exceeds 100 inches in the zones of heavy precipitation. Most of this comes in the wintertime from storm fronts that move in from the ocean. Due to the moisture and moderate temperature, the average relative humidity is high. Largely as a result of the proximity of the cool Pacific Ocean, the adjoining coastal area has some of the coolest, most stable temperatures to be found in the state. With increasing distance from the ocean, the marine influence is less pronounced and inland areas experience wider variations of temperature and lower humidities. There are thunderstorms in the mountains during the summer, but they are infrequent.
