Pasadena
is located in Los Angeles County, home to approximately 134,000 people and the 8th largest city in the state. It is considered the cultural center of the San Gabriel Valley and is famous for hosting the annual Rose Bowl football game and Tournament of Roses Parade. The city of Pasadena has much to offer - fine dining and shopping, world class museums, entertainment and recreational activities. In addition, it's convenient to many of southern California's most famous attractions. Old Pasadena is a popular shopping and dining area for both tourists and residents, and Paseo Colorado is a more upscale, modern mall designed to be an "urban village" with apartments above the mall. Another exclusive shopping district is located in the South Lake Avenue neighborhood. The Rose Bowl Stadium is a National Historic Landmark, host of the oldest and most famous college football postseason bowl game (every New Year's Day.) It is also the home field used by the University of California Los Angeles football team and has hosted five Super Bowls. One interesting oddity about Pasadena is that the city is full of wild parrots. Several myths abound about how these birds ended up in the city, but wherever they came from, Pasadenans have come to accept them as part of their city's life. The birds can be seen year round, but most often appear in the winter months. Pasadena is just twenty minutes to Universal Studios and the Los Angeles Zoo, 30 minutes to Hollywood, 40 minutes to Knotts Berry Farm and The Getty Center, 45 minutes to Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills and one hour to Disneyland.

Southern California enjoys a mild year round climate that is classified as Mediterranean. There are two distinct seasonal changes, categorized by the amount of rainfall received - a dry summer and wet winter with modest variation in temperature. In the dry season, a Pacific high-pressure system dominates the weather pattern creating warm and very dry air and a thick marine layer that typically advances inland during the night and burns off to hazy sunshine by midday. Surface pollutants trapped under the marine layer, or fog, create L.A.'s infamous "smog." In winter, the high system is no longer dominant and storms fed by subtropical moisture bring lots of rain into southern California during the months of November through March. Afternoon sea breezes of 10 to 15 mph are common. Strong offshore winds, known as "Santa Anas," though not uncommon, rarely cause damage.
