Hollywood is the place where cinematic magic had its humble beginnings. The community of Hollywood is actually a district of Los Angeles, located northeast of Santa Monica between Tarzan and Beverly Hills, near the Pacific Ocean. It began as part of a ranching community, and was incorporated as a municipality in 1903. In 1910, the townsmen voted to become part of the city of Los Angeles due to a badly needed water supply. In the early 1900s, motion picture production companies from New York and New Jersey started moving to California for the good weather and longer days. The Nestor Company founded the very first movie studio in Hollywood in 1911, and from there it continued to grow and attract producers and actors, becoming the home to numerous television and movie studios. The famous "Hollywood" sign originally read 'Hollywoodland," and was erected in 1923 to advertise a new housing development in the Hollywood Hills. The sign today is a famous landmark and a registered trademark and cannot be used without the permission of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The very first Academy Awards ceremony took place in Hollywood in 1929 and the tickets sold for $10.00. Hollywood Weather & Climate

Southern California enjoys a mild year round climate that is classified as Mediterranean. There are two distinct seasonal changes, categorized by the amount of rainfall received - a dry summer and wet winter with modest variation in temperature. In the dry season, a Pacific high-pressure system dominates the weather pattern creating warm and very dry air and a thick marine layer that typically advances inland during the night and burns off to hazy sunshine by midday. Surface pollutants trapped under the marine layer, or fog, create L.A.'s infamous "smog." In winter, the high system is no longer dominant and storms fed by subtropical moisture bring lots of rain into southern California during the months of November through March. Afternoon sea breezes of 10 to 15 mph are common. Strong offshore winds, known as "Santa Anas," though not uncommon, rarely cause damage.
