Oakville is a small community located in Napa County in Northern California. The town was formed in the 1860s as a water stop for the steam train owned by the Napa Valley Railroad Company, which carried passengers from ferry boats that docked in Vallejo to the resort town of Calistoga. The name "Oakville" came from the dense groves of dark green canyon oaks in the area. In 1868, H.W. Crabb purchased 240 acres near the Napa River and established a vineyard and winery there. The U.S Department of Agriculture began an experimental vineyard station in the town of Oakville in 1903, and this vineyard, known as Oakville Station, is operated by the University of California, Davis. Today there are 24 wineries and over 5000 acres of vineyard located within the boundary of the Oakville AVA. Tourists traveling on California State Route 29 through the Napa Valley often stop at the Oakville Grocery for supplies, a quaint shop (and one of the areas few "non-winery" businesses.) The Napa Valley Wine Train also runs through Oakville on the same historic route that the original steam train ran on in the 1800s. As part of the Napa Valley Wine Country, Oakville offers tourists an abundance of culture, history, art, antiquing and outdoor recreational opportunities. Nearby attractions include the towns of St. Helena, Calistoga, the Old Faithful Geyser, Lake Berryessa and the Bale Grist Mill State Park.

Oakville Weather & Climate

A Mediterranean climate  best describes the Napa Valley of California. Warm dry summers and wet cool winters, perfect for growing the award winning grapes used in the wine making, is what you can expect when visiting the area. Rain is rare during the growing season, with most occurring between October and May. January and February are usually the wettest months. The fog which characterizes the region keeps the vines cool and maintains the natural acidity in the fruit. A history of volcanic eruptions and earth movements means that soils are diverse in the area. Summers are always sunny and warm, but never uncomfortable due to the influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean and low humidity levels. Autumn is a spectacular time of the year in the Valley when vines are in full color and it is harvest time.
