Gasquet is a tiny town located in Del Norte County, between Crescent City and the Oregon state line on the North Fork of the Smith River. Founded in 1857 by a young Frenchman named Horace Gasquet, who came to California seeking his fortune in gold, Gasquet is known not for what's inside the town, but for its' fabulous scenery near the Redwoods and the Pacific Ocean. As you leave Crescent City going East on Highway 199, the 18-mile drive to the village of Gasquet takes you through some of the most gorgeous Redwoods scenery in the state. The mighty Smith River is the last completely undammed river in California, and is called the "crown jewel" of the state's scenic rivers. The North Fork has exceptionally crystal clear waters, even after a heavy rain, and it's a popular spot for white water rafting and kayaking trips. The Smith River is also known for its' steelhead and salmon fishing. The weather around Gasquet ranges from mild along the coast to much warmer inland near the Smith River, with the village being near the ocean, but just far enough away to be out of the coastal fog.

Gasquet Weather & Climate

Northwest California near the Smith River and the Oregon border has a cool weather climate year round. Summer temperatures are normally around the 65-degree mark, and rarely exceed 80 degrees. Unlike many other parts of the state, rain can be expected almost any month of the year, although the official rainy season runs October through March or early April. The average annual rainfall is 75 inches per year. Located near the Pacific Ocean, this region frequently experiences low clouds and fog right along the coastline, with clearing the further inland you travel. The same cool, ocean mists that nurture the giant redwoods of the region provide relief for visitors who come to the area to escape the summer heat of the interior valleys.
