Eagle-Lake is California's second largest natural lake and is located in the Lassen National Forest in the northern part of the state. With 27,000 acres of blue water, and at an altitude of 5,000 feet, Eagle Lake is famous for its fishing. The Eagle Lake Rainbow Trout is highly sought after for its exceptionally fast growth rate and trophy proportions. This pristine mountain lake is surrounded by pine forests and also offers swimming, boating, sailing, camping, hang-gliding and picnicking opportunities. The South Shore Trail is five miles long and perfect for hiking and biking, and the Bizz Johnson National Recreational Trail in nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park follows the beautiful Susan River Canyon along a forested railroad bed. There are naturalist activities in the park, a marina, several boat launches, a general store, laundry and shower facilities. Nearby Hat Creek and Lake Almanor offer even more outdoors activities, and Subway Cave near Eagle Lake provides a unique underground hiking experience. And, Eagle Lake is not only popular in summertime - it's a four season recreational area, with many groomed cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails in winter. Cities near Eagle Lake include Susanville, Redding and Red Bluff.

Eagle Lake Weather & Climate

Northeastern California , near the Lassen National Forest and Eagle Lake can have unpredictable weather, especially in winter. At the higher elevations (such as Eagle Lake at the 5,000-foot elevation level) it is vital to remember that winters can become extremely cold with snow. The climate generally features hot dry summers and cold moist winters. The geography of the region has volcanic areas and wetlands to the west and high desert to the east. Lassen Volcanic National Park is studded with lakes and crowned by 10,457-foot Lassen Peak. The eastern side, which resembles its neighbor, Nevada, has desert alkali lakes. The last volcanic activity at Mount Lassen was in 1915. Very little, if any, rain falls in northeast California in the summertime, but lightening storms, with no precipitation are possible. Winters can become quite cold with the mercury dipping below the freezing mark at night. At the higher elevations, such as Eagle Lake at the 5,000-foot elevation, it is vital to remember that weather conditions can change rapidly.
