Boonville is nestled deep within the coastal redwoods, located in Anderson Valley, north of San Francisco, along Highway 128 near the Russian River and the Pacific Ocean. This lush, beautiful valley is ideal for growing grapes, so vineyards and wineries dot the landscape. Rugged individualists settled in Anderson Valley in the early 1850s, including W.W. Boone (a relative of Daniel Boone) for whom the town of Boonville was named. The area remained isolated from the outside world well into the 20th century, and the people of the Valley even created their own language, called "Boontling," which modern linguists regard as one of the world's most extraordinary examples of a "homemade" language. Although few people are fluent in Boontling today, one can still catch bits of the language used by some of the older locals in their everyday conversation. Henry Woods State Park is located in the Anderson Valley and offers swimming, fishing, boating and rafting. Hiking is popular in nearby Navarro River Redwoods Park. This area is a great place for back road exploration, where you'll see sheep farms and pasturelands, giant redwoods, vineyards and wineries, and small towns like Philo and Navarro. The valley eventually opens up onto the sandy beaches at the mouth of the Navarro River, and then empties into the Pacific Ocean. Anderson Valley is also well known for their cuisine, delicious beers and excellent wines.

Boonville Weather & Climate

The rugged northern Pacific Coast, north of the San Francisco Bay Area, experiences a mild climate year round. There is very little variation in temperature from winter, spring, summer and fall. Summers are dry, but typically cool and foggy right along the coast. Further inland, near the Anderson Valley, temperatures will be warmer with more sunny days. Be advised that it can be in the 60s in the Mendocino coast area, and just 30 miles inland the temperature can be in the 90s. Cool ocean breezes and a thick marine layer helps moderate coastal temperatures. If visiting during wintertime, there is a good chance it will rain during your stay. November through March are the wettest months. Fall is generally the sunniest time along the northern Pacific Coast.
