Avalon
is a mere 22 miles off the coast of Los Angeles, but it feels like it's on the other side of the world. Depart from Long Beach, San Pedro or Newport Beach by helicopter or ferry, and arrive at one of the island's two main cities. Avalon, on the east side, has lots of activities and pops with excitement. Two Harbors, to the west, is more isolated and perfect for camping, hiking and snorkeling. On Catalina Island, you'll find boating, fishing, golf, kayaking, scuba diving, parasailing, jeep tours and more. One of the most exciting adventures on Catalina, especially for the kids, is an underwater tour. Take a glass bottom boat ride, or one of the new semi-submersible submarines that provides a close up view of underwater gardens and sea life. Whales, dolphins, flying fish and sea lions can be spotted from boats. Hike the isolated beaches further down the island and see wild boar and deer and bald eagles. Back in Avalon, enjoy the quaint shops and restaurants, casino ballroom and theater, or visit a day spa. The choices are endless! Whatever you choose to do, you'll find a unique blend of isolation and entertainment unlike anyplace in the country when you visit beautiful Catalina Island!

Avalon Weather & Climate

Clean air, clean water and no smog - all three describe Catalina Island/Avalon, just twenty miles west of Los Angeles. The climate here is very mild year round, with very little variation in temperature. The rainy season runs November through March, with most rain in the months of December through February. Summers are dry and sunny with occasional low clouds and fog. Cool breezes from the Pacific help moderate summer temperatures. The ocean is the source of humid, maritime air in summer, but the temperatures are so cool that the humidity is not even noticed. This beautiful island includes 76 square miles of forest, clean beaches and rugged coastline where sea otters and seals - as well as people - find refuge.
