Truckee
is a historic little town nestled high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of northern California. The town got its interesting name from a Paiute Indian Chief who assisted the settlers in their migration west through the wilderness. His name sounded like "Tro-Kay," to the white men, so they dubbed the area "Truckee." Located just west of the Nevada State line, with Interstate 80 running right through town, Truckee has a great central location for exploring all of the High Sierra/Lake Tahoe attractions - and there are many. Just a couple include Donner Lake and the Donner Memorial State Park. The Tahoe Basin region is one of the most well known recreational sites in the U.S. - both winter and summer. There are 12 ski resorts located within an easy drive of Truckee, including Sugar Bowl and Squaw Valley. South Lake Tahoe with its casinos, live shows and other entertainment is approximately an hour away, and Reno is only 35 minutes from Truckee. Outdoor recreational activities in or near Truckee include hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, horseback riding, fishing, boating, kayaking and canoeing on the beautiful Truckee River. Downtown Truckee is filled with boutiques and art galleries, and dining runs the gamut from casual pubs to five-star restaurants. Accommodations in Truckee range from a historic hotel in town complete with claw-foot tubs and antiques to cabins and cottages along the lake.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, just west of the Nevada state line has an alpine mountain climate. This high mountain region is known as one of the chilliest spots in the country, which comes as a big surprise to many that visit California. Nestled between the Sierra Nevada peaks, the towns of Truckee and Graeagle, and the Donner Lake region, often gets an inversion, whereby cold air is trapped overnight, thus the reason for the extreme cold temperatures in the very early morning hours - even in summertime. As the sun comes up, the temperature begins to rise and daytime highs are usually quite pleasant. Large amounts of snow are received in the higher elevations of the Sierras - up to 40 feet. Rain is possible any month of the year, although most occurs October through April. Mountain weather conditions can change quickly, and rain in the lower elevations can mean snow, sleet or ice in the higher elevations.
