Sebastopol
is a little known town, tucked away quietly at the "crossroads of the Russian River wine country and the Sonoma coastline." Located one hour north of San Francisco, Sebastopol offers visitors a relaxed family atmosphere, and has earned the nickname of "Main Street USA." Sebastopol is bordered by orchards and vineyards and the rolling hills of Laguna de Santa Rosa on the east, and by Ragle National Park to the west. This means a recreational paradise for those who enjoy hiking, biking, horseback riding, golf, tennis, bird and wildlife watching. The nearby Russian River offers even more opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing, and white water rafting. A drive in the lush countryside around Sebastopol takes you to award-winning wineries and past old-fashioned country farms, bed and breakfasts and country inns. Sebastopol is an easy day trip to the spectacular Sonoma coastline and the seaside villages of Bodega Bay and Jenner-by-the-Sea. The Northern California coast region, including the Russian River area, has a climate of mild days and cool nights - even in summertime. Right along the coast, low clouds and fog that usually burns off by early afternoon, is common. The further inland you go away from the ocean, the sunnier it is. There is little or no rain May through September. The rainy season begins in late October or November, with January and February being the wettest months. Flooding is a problem in winter when rains are heavy within a short period of time, mostly due to the many creeks and rivers in the area. Strong winds are usually present right along the coastline, but lessen as you travel inland. Fall is generally the sunniest season along the northern California coast.
