Rio-Vista s a small town located along the Sacramento River in the Sacramento River Delta Region of Solano County. It is considered part of the Vallejo-Fairfield metro area and has a population of approximately 7,000 residents. Rio Vista was founded in 1858 and originally called Los Brazos Del Rio, which means "the arms of the river." With its prime location along the river, Rio Vista was a natural as a river port for shipping agriculture and other goods. It was also a transfer station for the Pony Express changing from ship to horse. In the mid-1930s, natural gas was discovered near Rio Vista, making it the largest natural gas field west of the Rocky Mountains. Today, tourism plays a big role in the citys economy, along with agriculture and manufacturing. Many outdoor activities are available in the area, including fishing and boating, golf, tennis, hiking and biking. The town is also host to an annual bass derby/festival every October. Rio Vista became famous in 1985 when it was visited by a lost Humpback whale, which was nicknamed "Humphrey." The whale attracted hundreds of curiosity seekers before it was guided back out to sea by rescue workers. Then again in 2007, mother and calf Humpbacks were spotted in the river near the town. Rio Vista is approximately 51 miles from Sacramento and 59 miles from San Francisco.

Rio Vista Weather & Climate

The North Central Valley Region of California, including the California Delta, has weather that is hot and dry in the summertime, and wet and cool in the wintertime. Summers consist of low humidity levels, and occasional temperatures that climb above the 95-degree mark. In the Delta Area, where the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers meet, humidity is a little higher. Thunderstorms are possible anytime of the year, but they are usually light and infrequent. Rain is almost non-existent in summertime in the valley. In winter, the Pacific high that keeps storms at bay in summer retreats southward, bringing widespread, moderate precipitation to the area. Also in winter, a shallow layer of ground fog, known as "tule fog," frequently forms at night and can persist for two or three weeks. Flooding in winter results when rain is heavy over a period of one or two days.
