Point-Loma
is a spectacular four-mile peninsula that encompasses the entrance to San Diego Bay and is one of the oldest neighborhoods of San Diego. Bounded on the west by the magnificent Pacific Ocean and on the east by the sparkling Bay, Point Loma offers breathtaking views of both the ocean and city skyline. The neighborhoods of Point Loma include Fleetridge, Wooded Acres, LaPlaya, Roseville, Loma Portal, Ocean Beach, Sunset Cliffs, Midway District, College Area, Centraloma, Woods and Point Loma Heights. With a fascinating history, Point Loma was the site where Europeans arriving from Mexico in 1542 first set eyes on what was to become California. Situated near the heart of the city, Point Loma offers all of the amenities, conveniences and attractions of San Diego. The community has a population of around 18,000 and offers an array of water sports and leisure activities. The nearby San Diego Yacht Club was host to the America's cup, and whale watching, boating and fishing are also popular local pastimes. Explore tide pools, go swimming, hiking, biking, scuba diving and snorkeling, play golf, visit area theme parks, the famous San Diego Zoo, enjoy live entertainment, fine dining and shopping. Point Loma's famous landmark is the Cabrillo National Monument, named after explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which guided ships through San Diego Bay from 1855 to 1891, is part of the monument and is open for tours.

Extreme Southern California, in the San Diego area, enjoys a beautiful, mild climate year round. January is generally the coldest and wettest month of the year, and August is usually the warmest month. In actuality, however, there is very little variation throughout the year in temperature in the coastal region, except when easterly winds off the desert pushes the temperature up a few degrees. The dry season runs May through September with very little measurable precipitation during this time. October is a transitional month, and is usually dry but can have variable weather. Fog and low clouds along the coast are common, but usually burn off by noon. A marked feature of the climate in this region is the wide variation within a short distance due to the topography of the area. Visitors can enjoy a coastal climate, mountains and desert all within a day's drive of each other.
