Needles got its name from the jagged mountain peaks at the south end of the valley. Located along Highway 40 in southern California, Needles is near the Riverside-San Bernardino area of the state. It is one of the oldest communities along the Colorado River, where the Mojave Indians lived long before settlers came to this land. Needles has hot summers and mild, pleasant winters that draw visitors year round. Some of the things to do in the area include visiting the East Mojave National Scenic Area where you can experience desert wildlife and scenery, visit real ghost towns and desert caverns, and the natural beauty of Kelso Dunes and Topock Gorge. The Colorado River offers swimming, boating and fishing, and a beautiful 18-hole golf course overlooks the river. Needles has a colorful and interesting history, where the popular Route 66 went right through the town. There is still approximately 10 miles of Route 66 within the city limits, open for driving. Needles is reminiscent of everyone's "home town," with shops and restaurants, small town cafes, grocery stores and motels and hotels. There are also two marina parks and a water slide park for the kids! Everything you need to have a relaxing and very enjoyable vacation!

Needles Weather & Climate

A hot, desert climate with mild winters describes Needles' weather. Located in southern California just west the Arizona State line, Needles is one of the hottest and driest places in the state. For instance, in the summer, it can have highs in excess of 110 degrees. Winters, by comparison, are very mild with cool evenings. Summer is a dry period, although occasionally moist air drifts northward from the Gulf of Mexico or the Gulf of California and creates scattered, locally heavy showers. What rain that does occur in the wintertime is usually between the months of January through March. People who enjoy outdoors sports are attracted to Needles' warm winters and abundance of sunny days.
