Alturas
is the most northeastern city in the state of California. With a population of approximately 3,000 this small town is 150 miles from Redding, and 170 miles from Reno. Alturas and the surrounding area sits in the shadow of the Cascade Mountain Range, with fields and prairie stretching out for miles around you. The Modoc National Wildlife Refuge borders the town on the south, and nearby Goose Lake, as well as several reservoirs, offers fishing and other outdoors recreation. A vista point along the highway, only a quarter of a mile from town, offers a great place to view wildlife such as deer, antelope, and Canada Geese. Sometimes you might even spot a deer wandering the main streets of town! Alturas is nestled in the foothills of the Modoc National Forest. Here you will find hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, and mountain biking in summer, and skiing in wintertime. Other things to see in town are the Alturas Railroad Museum and the Modoc County History Museum. Alturas is also home to a colorful hot-air balloon festival, usually held in September. The extreme northeast corner of the state of California encompasses the foothills of the Shasta Cascade Mountain region, the Pit River and the Modoc National Wildlife Range.The climate features hot dry summers and cold moist winters with snow at higher elevations. The geography of the region has volcanic areas and wetlands to the west and high desert to the east. Lassen Volcanic National Park is studded with lakes and crowned by 10,457-foot Lassen Peak. The eastern side, which resembles its neighbor, Nevada, has desert alkali lakes. The last volcanic activity at Mount Lassen was in 1915. Very little, if any, rain falls in northeast California in the summertime. Lightening storms, with no precipitation are possible. Winters can become quite cold with the mercury dipping below the freezing mark at night.
